Kinja'd!!!

I’ve recently become a father to a cute little ball of a daughter, and now it’s time to sell my 2017 Corvette Grand Sport. I’m not getting rid of the Vette just because of the kid, I mainly want to free up some money each month and get a cheaper (already paid for) car to have fun in that I also don’t feel bad about getting messed up from various baby messes. This car is too new and nice to get dinged up from the baby seat, carrier, diaper bags, stroller, etc… Plus then she can learn how and help to work on an older car as she grows.

So, I figured I’d reach out to the fellow Oppo’s to see where the best places are to list a fairly new car for sale. I know of the usual places (Craigslist, AutoTrader, BAT) but wanted to get any tips I can, to see what other people use to search and buy from, and also to give first dibs to fellow car enthusiasts.

If anyone is seriously interested in the car please let me know too, I’d be glad to meet up and show the car in person (I’m in TX). I would rather know the car goes to someone who truly appreciates it. Thanks in advance

- Looking to Sell the car outright and buy cheaper used (still fun) car.

- Figure trading it in at dealership will only get bottom dollar, plus then I’d be making payments again on new car.

- Any tips on selling car that’s not paid off (my first car I’ve sold still owing money on).

Kinja'd!!!

2017 Corvette Grand Sport - Sterling Blue- 1LT (basically has the upgrades of a Z06 without the supercharger, i.e. no over-heating problems)

Magnetic Ride Control, Electronic Diff, Performance Exhaust (multi-mode)

All records provided and all work done at the dealership.

Still under warranty - 3 Yr/36,000 Miles Bumper-to-Bumper (where’s Doug at?), 5 YR/60,000 Mile Powertrain

I will not help you because I don’t want you to sell that beautiful machine and so I won’t tell you to also consider listing on Cars.com

Selfish curiosity, but how much are you looking/hoping to get for it?

Have you checked the c7 section on the corvetteforums? Even if you don’t list it there, might be able to see what others are getting for their cars.

If it was Watkins Glen Gray, I’d be tempted to come pick it up myself. Is it an A8 or M7?

For pricing, go to nadaguides.com and “build” your car there. You can expect to get something less than the “Clean Retail” amount.

For marketing, take the ususal places you mention, plus possibly one of the Corvette forums. Not sure on their rule for selling a car, but you should get a better buyer there than Cragslist.

For the bank loan, the loan will need to be paid off before you can transfer the title to somebody else. Assuming that you don’t have the cash to pay it off until it’s sold, you’ll need to disclose that up front to the buyer. Not a big deal, they just will not get the title until you use their $$$ to pay off the car, then get the title sent from the bank. Most buyers that can afford your car will want a discount as a result of the waiting period.

Finally, does your state give a tax discount for trades? Some states do, where you don’t pay tax on the value of your trade. If your current car is worth more than the one you’re buying, and you trade it in, you wouldn’t have to pay tax. Depending on how much you get on offer from a dealer, that may make up the hassle of selling yourself.

Texas is as big as France, Belgium, and Luxembourg combined...

Are you in/near Dallas, Austin, Houston, Amarillo, or El Paso?

This issue is a bit of a pet peeve for me, but we’re talking hundreds of miles. It is the same distance to Kansas as to Houston from where I live in DFW.

I’m more than 500mi from some of the borders of my own state.

Probably start on Corvette forums or somewhere similar although depending on the forum sometimes you need to have posting history before you can post to the classifieds. If you do Craigslist you’re going to have to put up with all the usual BS that comes along with it, and Auto Trader you have to pay to post.

As for selling a car with a lien on it, assuming you can get more money than you owe on the loan, you would basically have the seller (or their lender) cut a cashier’s check to your bank for the full sale price, and then your bank takes the check, pays off the loan, gives you a lien release document, and cuts you a check for the difference.

I’m in Wisconsin where they no longer print paper titles for cars with liens on them. Instead the lender gets the title but in my case my lender was a credit union with a local branch here in Madison and HQ in like Milwaukee or something, and the original title was at HQ. I had to get the credit union to print out a lien release which I then took to the DMV with the buyer, where the DMV printed out a duplicate title, which I then signed over to the buyer, and they used to register the car in their name.

If you have the paper title then once you have the lien release from the bank you can send the buyer on their way with that and the title, unless your state requires you to be at the DMV to transfer the title to the buyer.

If your lender is not a bank or credit union or some other place with physical locations near you then you’ll need to call them and ask them what their process is for selling a car to a private party is, and also find out from your state DMV what their process is for transferring the title of a car with a lien on it is.

Ha ha, sorry about that. Yeah I’m in Houston. Didn’t know if anyone would really be intersted, so I was general in my location.

Wow, thanks for the all the info. I agree about CL and don’t really want to post on there. I’ve joined a couple of Vette forums, but haven’t posted sells ad yet, I wanted to see if there were any other places to list that I hadn’t thought about. Thanks again

any chance of finding a dealer that still has an SS in stock for less than you owe on the Vette?

side note - how did you like Spring Mountain? just booked the 3 day classes for me and the fiance on our honeymoon

It’s a Manual. Saw the WGG in person and wasn’t as much of a fan as I thought I would be. This Sterling Blue is one I hadn’t seen before and was a good mix between the plain silver and grey, plus I usually like blue cars anyway. And appreantly Chevy isn’t making it anymore on the Vettes, so it’s a 1 year special now.

Chevy does that a lot now with colors. Shark Grey would be my top color of choice but I think it was only available in 2015? Kinda annoying. The Sterling Blue looks sharp in pictures, haven’t seen one personally yet.

BaT would take it, but I have no specific experience with them. Seems like they’ll pretty much sell anything if you pay the fee.

Wouldn’t hurt to get a CarMax quote. They’re slightly better than trading in to a dealer, but can be lower than selling private party. For a desirable car they’d like to have on the lot they tend not to low-ball as bad. Plus you wouldn’t have to go through all the lien title BS as they’d take care of that for you.

But in a metro as big as Houston you’d probably find a buyer pretty quick?

Thanks for the great feedback. I will also post on the corvette forums that I had signed up with, just hadn’t done so yet. I think that Texas does give a tax break if you do trade it in, but thought that only applied to buying another car from them. It would reduce the hassle though, so you are right in that regard.

Hmmm, SS, now that’s a good idea! Just have to find a dealer with one.

Spring Mountain was great, definintely worth doing, it’s an A+ facility, rooms were nice, food was good, and the classes were great. When are you going?

Hmm, just realized that I never did my write up for Spring Mountain after going. I’ll have to do that now

CarMax, good idea, might as well ape Doug and see what they would offer. I’m hoping to find a buyer pretty quick, just didn’t want to deal with too much hassle like I usually do when posting on craigslist.

If nothing else a Carmax buy quote gives you a floor to your selling price. (Remember they’ll buy your car even if you don’t buy a car from them and quotes are good for 30 days at any location.) When I sold my Civic Si they offered me $15k and fair retail was probably $16.5k. Dealer offered $12k, so at least there is that. Ended up with the dealer matching the Carmax quote, which was probably a bit of a surrender on my part but...

I’d like to get around $58k for it, but am willing to be bend some. Car was $66,450 MSRP, before taxes and such.

My advice is to first try listing it on a Corvette Forum, maybe even a TX Corvette Forum. That’ll put in front of people that are fans of the car, and know the current values. Craigslist and Cars.com would be a last resort. 90% of people who contact you on those sites are time wasters, scammers, or want to charge you to help you sell the car.
